If something is broken, it helps to say which iPhone you have, which version of iOS it runs, and which version of whatmodel! — that last one is at the bottom of Settings in the app. A screenshot is worth a paragraph.

How does whatmodel! know what car it is?

When you take a photo, it is sent to an image-recognition service that names the make and model. The app then looks that name up in the Showroom's 2,096 cards. It needs an internet connection to do this.

It named the wrong car

Tap Wrong car? Report at the bottom of the result screen and tell us what it really is. It only takes the name — never your photo — and it is how the app gets better. Reporting does not change the card you were given; if you would rather not keep it, press Discard instead of adding it.

It says the car is "not in the Showroom yet"

whatmodel! can name almost any car, but only the 2,096 in the Showroom can be collected. New cars are added in batches, and cars people photograph most often are the first ones considered — so the ones you find are helping choose them.

Why was my photo turned away?

Cars have to be found in the real world. A car on a phone, a screen, a poster or a magazine doesn't count, and neither do toys, scale models, statues or reflections. If a real car was turned away, try again a little closer, with more of the car in the frame and in reasonable light.

What does it cost?

Your first catch is on us. After that whatmodel! is a subscription — weekly, or yearly with three days free the first time — or a one-off lifetime purchase. Prices are shown in the app before you pay.

How do I cancel, or get my purchase back on a new phone?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple: open Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone, or Settings → Membership inside the app. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. On a new phone, tap Restore on the plans screen, or sign in to the account you used before.

Do I need an account?

Not to buy or to use the camera. You are asked to sign in — with Apple, Google or just your email address — when you add a car to your Showroom, except for your very first catch, which you can keep straight away. Signing in is what backs your collection up.

I have a new phone. Is my collection gone?

Not if you were signed in. Every car you catch is backed up to your account, so signing in on the new phone brings your Showroom back — your photos, your stickers and the way you arranged your album included. They come back a few at a time over the first minutes, newest first; until a card's picture has arrived it shows the car's drawing. Cars caught before photo backup existed get their pictures backed up the next time the old phone opens the app while signed in.

My map is empty

Cars are only pinned on the map if whatmodel! was allowed to use your location when you caught them. Turn it on in iOS Settings → whatmodel! → Location; cars you catch from then on will appear.

How do I add the widgets?

Open whatmodel! once, then press and hold an empty part of your Home Screen, tap Edit → Add Widget, and search for whatmodel!. There are two — your latest catch and your progress — each in two sizes.

How do quests and badges work?

Every Monday brings three new quests, the same for everyone. Meet one and tap Claim for its XP before the week ends. Badges are earned for particular finds, and a few are hidden until you win them. The badge on your profile picture is your rarest, unless you tap it to choose another.

How do I delete my data or my account?

Settings → Delete my data clears your collection, photos and places from the phone, and deletes the photos and stickers backed up to your account. Settings → Account → Delete account removes your account and everything backed up with it from our servers, for good. The privacy policy explains exactly what is kept and for how long.
